Our History

Our roots date back one hundred years to a Canadian company formed under the laws of the province of New Brunswick - Maine & New Brunswick Electrical Power Company, Limited. This company remains today a wholly-owned subsidiary of Maine Public Service Company, a company that itself has roots back to 1917.

Maine Public Service Company, originally incorporated as Gould Electric Company, was a privately held subsidiary of Consolidated Electric & Gas Company providing electric service to residents and businesses in Northern Maine. In 1947, the Company's capital stock was sold as a result of the Company's forced divestiture. From 1947 to our corporate reorganization in 2003, Maine Public Service Company was a publicly-traded company on the American Stock Exchange, trading under the symbol "MPS".

On June 30, 2003, Maine & Maritimes Corporation was formed as a holding company in the State of Maine, owning all shares of Maine Public Service Company. Based on our core competency developed over the past 103 years in serving the infrastructure needs of residents and businesses, our vision is to focus on the utility industry, utility-related growth, and continue building outstanding customer service relationships. And, as a 103 year-old company, we know the value of keeping our commitments.
